About Carl Nelson

Founder and Owner of Grand River Percussion Solutions

Carl Nelson founded Grand River Percussion Solutions in 2020 with the desire to promote the percussive arts by working with music educators and their students on many of the often overlooked issues with percussion, including equipment selection, maintenance, and repairs, as well as instruction on technique and tone production and other topics.

He is a PA native, graduating from Grove City College (PA), with a BM in Music Education and Music Business before studying percussion performance at the University of Kansas.

While at KU, he served as the Treasurer for the Kansas Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society as well as co-host for the chapter’s annual Day of Percussion.

He began work as a marketing assistant with Yamaha’s Band Orchestral Division in Grand Rapids, MI, before transitioning into school music retail with Marshall Music, Michigan’s largest school music dealer. It was during this time he started incorporating the concepts of GRPS into his regular service visits with schools.

Carl performs as a free-lance percussionist for local community and school musical theatres and area churches. His diverse background and decades of experiences from those in the education fields gives him an excellent perspective on the scholastic percussive arts.

In addition to his passion for percussion, Carl spends his time with his wife and daughter with many activities both within and outside the music world.
